In photography and digital art, Ben uses color and lighting to create moody, sometimes metaphorical images of masculine characters, making use of his beard and body hair to depict a kind of “enhanced natural” style. Rather than depicting the smooth-shaven Greco-Roman marbles, he prefers to embrace a more mundane worldview where men can be found with any style of grooming, even the most hirsute. The intricacies of facial hair create interesting shadows and reflect colors differently than skin. While often the subject of his own photography he does sometimes have the benefit of a model. He uses friends in both natural and urban settings to capture their expressions in either full-frame or close up portraits.
